New System design

Recommended Posts

A sketch of the fish loop of my new AP system.

3 Fish tanks each 210 Gallon

3 RFS each 5 gallon

1 Sieve 100-175 micron screen (haven't got one made of wedge wire yet just a 150 mesh)

1 Moving bed Bio Reactor 55 gallon drum

Each fish tank has a split outflow, one to RFS and the other less dirty flow to Sieve. RFS flows to sieve, Sieve to MBBR and back to sump.

Tell me what you all think, should I do something differently?

Thanks!

Hey Swede,

You seem to have an extra set of pipes going to/coming from your fish tanks…..or am I seeing double.  I can see where the water is going from the fish tanks to the three RFS…..and where it goes from the sump to the fish tanks.   What's the function of the other lines to the fish tank and sieve filter?

Hi Gary

Hey Swede,   What's the function of the other lines to the fish tank and sieve filter?

Gary

It's a midwater and/or skimer pickup line, see red highlight

Each fish tank has a split outflow, one to RFS and the other less dirty flow to Sieve..........................................

Lol... sorry Mathias.... culmination of the last few days in the aquaponics ether on the intrawebs...

The full moon has certainly brought the loonies out to play this month... ;)

Hey Swede,

Those are dual drain tanks?  If so, then the bottom drain will be A LOT more dirty than the sidewall drain.

Is there a reason for using three small RFS rather than one large one?

What's your plan for the sieve backwash / rinse water?  Transfer to the bottom system?

Hi Jeremiah,

The thought was to have shorter lines from fish tank to rfs so less solids will accumulate in the lines. The other thing, which I am not sure is better or worse at this point is ease of cleaning out a small rfs and the use of less water.. Now this may not be right once I calculate how much water I need to remove daily to maintain a certain nitrate level in fish loop. On the other hand it's really not a problem since I can just open a valve and let it flow through one of the smaller rfs.

On the sieve I would flush those solids to a MT or a bucket to be moved to MT depending in the design of the plant loop.. Hope that makes sense. :)
