Just looked them up on amazon. How big are they? Any issues with getting them caught in the roots when removing spent plants?

They are a very common ornamental aquarium shrimp.  I've kept them off and on for much of my life.  They can be a lot of fun, but have limited value in RAS/AP beyond providing a little bit of extra forage.  They are basically a fancy colored version of our native grass/glass shrimps, which are wonderful to have in earthan ponds, as they are excellent forage for pond fish.

I use grass shrimp as forage shrimp and cleaners too. Does anyone raise a slightly larger variety that can be eaten grilled ect. ?

Yes you want more edible shrimp try the Malaysian shrimp or giant river prawn. They get way bigger than tigger or white shrimp . Never eaten them before but they look awesome on the grill.
