pH balancing new water

Hi,

When a control freak like me starts to get windy about a discussion on control of production parameters it might suggest that we are engaging in too much analysis and too little doing.

Sometimes we have to accept that plants will grow in spite of our efforts rather than because of them.

Agreed - however one of the reasons I am gathering data on this is to try to understand what the optimal conditions are - balanced between fish, plants and bacteria.

If we know these things it will allow us to tune substrate choice, shade, heating/cooling (be it electrical, solar, underground or slow combustion oven), fish choice etc.

I beleive there is a sweet spot for temperature and pH for all 3 in a system. I prepose that (for a Jade Perch system at least) the sweet spot is pH of 7 and temp of 25C based on the below gathered data.

Jade perch optimal pH 6.5 - 8.5 Temp 22C - 28C

You're right on the money.....and you hardly had to do any research at all. I agree that knowing what suits your plants and fish best is important. I took daily readings of everything for the first 12 months that I had my fish.
