It was designed to be modular and has already been taken apart and moved once ((from the back patio to the new greenhouse)) and everything except the 4'x4'x4' 400-gallon fish tank can be removed from the greenhouse and transported anywhere you want to take it for re-assembly and operation.   2. This is my system that I built in melbourne Australia in March 2013 as single IBC with a third cut off for the growbed and a few Goldfish in the fish tank. I then got the aquaponic addiction and wanted too go further, I needed to start small or face divorce proceedings, as it was I built the system in the garage undercover and produced it as a working unit to avoid any trouble. It's is not the way I wanted to go but the "Minister of Finances" needed too be eased into aquaponics anything that looks technical is not her forte. Once she was onboard and had seen some plant growth I have been able too add to the system at a slow rate, nothing too fast as to have any caveat put in place. I think this is a process most married men go through, or most that I know. The current fish in the tank are 28 Siver Perch 125mm = 5" and 5 Tandus (Eel tailed) Catfish slightly bigger, once we harvest and eat our first fish the Minster of Finances will be fully onboard. I would like to add a couple of largerTrout to get a fish on the diner table a bit earlier the waiting for the Slivers to grow out, but the Trout would overtake them in growth and probably eat a few. Because of starting off small I used 50mm = 2" PVC pipe to the growbeds and should have used 90mm, so I made the SLO a dual system and found it works far better than the single one I was using. If I was to start again it would be 90mm all the way. I built my 12volt backup air supply from a 12volt mobile phone charger and a 12volt relay, it runs a Hailea ACO-003 air compresssor. The battery is a DiaMec 20amh and the trickle charger is a Protecta giving me approximately 16 -18 hrs. The filters are a Raidial Flow Filter & Bio Filter using K1 bio media, and both barrels are 65 litres each. I have installed both to one SLO outlet and I will install another bio filter to the other SLO outlet, I only have room for one barrel unless I have the second at the rear of the system. I'll install just the bio filter and see if I need to add another raidial flow filter later. Being winter here now the fish aren't eating and the filters are performing very well in stopping any uneaten food entering the growbeds, so it looks like they are a success.

  4. Hi, many people asked me about aquaponics system sizing and possible yields. Therefore I created a spreadsheet to do some calculations on this. It is just an estimation tool of course because an exact calculation depends on an almost endless list of factors. I'd really like to hear your responds on these calculations so I can further fine tune it. Feel free to comment or send responds.   5. I recently found what seems like the ideal timer for AP system builders. I was looking for a timer to run system cycling... and was frustrated with the lack of control on commonly found timers. Meet the CAP ART-DNe Adjustable Recycle Timer The timer can run a pump from 1 second to 40 minutes.... then turn off between 1 minute and 8 hours! This is an amazing amount of control. It's a little pricy ($66 through Amazon), but the savings due to reduced pump usage should pay for itself, and end your reliance on bell siphons which can be very difficult to manage. The question I have now is, how does one find the optimal cycle times? Does it vary from plant to plant in the grow bed? Does it change due to the maturity of the plant? Regards, R

  7. Hi All, Thanks to all of the members here that are so helpful. One thing I like to do is gather observations/tips/practices and from them create helpful rules or axioms... getting to the nut of things. If I may be forgiven, I will offer some up for any support or criticism, just to help me develop a deeper understanding... I expect these may not be fully correct, but here goes: 1 - The system's total ability to convert ammonia to plant food ultimately depends on the *amount* of bacteria in the system. 2 - *Total wet surface area* in the system represents the ultimate limits to the bacteria. 3 - All portions of the system benefit from aeration, and one can never over aerate the water. If all of this is true, it seems to me that a deep gravel fish bed (wet surface area), and aggressive aeration are easy ways to get the most performance from ANY system. In other words, if I over-design in these areas... I can't go wrong, and might avoid some number of problems this way. Do I have this right? (I just got hold of 2 IBC's, so I'm really thinking hard about design at this point.) Finally... I have no knowledge about this... but what do you all think about maximum rate flush cycles? In other words... if I had the ability to fill and drain my grow beds several times an hour (which I do), would this be good, bad, or simply pointless? I'm just wondering what the plants might appreciate most. If they like it, I suppose it is worth designing in. Thank you all so much. R
  8. in OUTBACKOZZIE KALGOORLI SYSTEM Gud day can you help me about the information for exact sizes and dimension of the siphon and the drainage system for the half bluebarrel that OUTBACKOZZIE used? Are u using a mega siphon? What sizes are the plumbing? I hope u can help about this.. May plan is ten blue half barrels and a 1000 liter fishtank and a sump. Thank you in advance...
