jrata posted a topic in AQUAPONICS SYSTEMSHi All, My name is Julia. I have been approached to install an aquaponics system school-based work program into a local school and use it as the vehicle to drive future sustainable projects and programs for the school. It’s a 3 stage project, starting small (stage 1) - so the students can monitor, evaluate and document the project to help procure further funds for the next 2 stages. I'm currently developing a project plan for approval. This is my first aquaponics project but my passion and interest for self-sustainable methods has lasted 10 years. I studied aquaculture for 7 years (part-time), and have 15 years project management experience. I don’t have any hands-on knowledge, but I have the drive to make things happen for the kids, especially teaching under privilege kids how food can grow - in turn empowering them with knowledge and know how innovation. I'm the first to admit I'm definitely not an expert. If you have the time I would like your advice for the following methods: We want to construct 3 x aquaponic prototypes (as simple as possible) - Outside, flood and drain with grow bed media - Outside, flood and drain with a float based system - Undercover, flood and drain with grow bed media (alternate with below option for monitoring and evaluation) - Undercover, flood and drain with a float based system (alternate with above option for monitoring and evaluation) What design method do you suggest we start with for the 3 aquaponic prototypes? The facts are: - The school has 4m x 12m x 3m total space. - School budget will probably be no more than $5k and that would need to be used for preparation for the area, roofing, a small shed and security fencing. - We're hoping to get sponsors on board and procure much of the hardware needed from the community. - I don't want to use all this space for stage 1. We just want to setup 3 small systems for the beginning and grow into something bigger stage 2. - Construction, running and harvesting of the systems must be easy for the kids to participate in at all levels – A hands on approach all the way. - The method I’m thinking is a Fish Tank --> Pump --> Plants --> Gravity ïƒ -->Fish Tank. Can you provide me with more specific details if this is the way to go ie appropriate size for the fish tank, type of pump, piping design, fish to grow bed ratio etc. All advice would be appreicated to get this project started for the kids. I look forward to hearing from you all.
