  1. Hey all! The word around town is that this forum has a lot of good advice (unlike some others online). I decided to make an account today. I have cobbled together a twin IBC tote aquaponics system in my side yard. It's a great hobby, but wanted to share it with other people. I'm sure all my friends are sick of hearing about it by now, except those I have managed to infect with the aquaponics bug. I try to do everything a bit different, as long as it makes sense. Here is an outline of what I have setup Two IBC totes, 330gal and a 275gal. The larger tote has the top cut off, and serves as the main fish tank. The bottom half of the smaller 275gal tote works as my grow bed. The top half of the smaller tote is mounted on top of the larger tote, with water draining down from the center cap. I use the "top tank" for raising minnows, which the bottom fish eat. I raise fairy shrimp in a section of the top tank, which the minnows eat. About 20 clams live in the bottom fish tank for filtering Somewhere around 10 amano shrimp are mixed in each tank, including the grow bed. If you want to see the minnows, I built a little monitoring interface with a raspberrypi and some coding (my day job has me online most of the time). Check it out if you would like to, http://70.162.39.217/ and thanks for existing so that I could find this forum!
  2. Hello All, I followed Mr. Weissenbach post over here from the G+ Aquaponics community, great site, thank you. I caught the Aquaponics bug a few years ago after seeing Rob Torcellini's very first Aquaponics video on YouTube. Steadily over the last few years our family hobby has grow from a single, outdoor IBC system into more than 80 square feet of greenhouse grow space. Our Aquaponics adventure has transformed our family into thinking more sustainably and more responsibly about quality food production and self sufficiency. A true family affair, my wife and children have all "caught the bug", we happily work together to build, maintain, plant harvest and eat our Aquaponics system and gardens. I generally focus on the technology side of things, like automating the climate control in the greenhouse and nearly every other aspect of system stability. Dawn, my wife and the twins do most of the planting and harvesting. Our oldest son has taken to the chemistry and enjoys running nutrient panels and diligently monitors the nitrification process and aquatic health of the system. We live on the central coast of California, which, as you may have heard is firmly planted in a drought right now and quickly moving up the stages of mandatory water conservation. Good thing we have our Aquaponics system dialed in and consuming only about 10 gallons of fresh water per week with very near 0 wasted water!
  3. Hello all, I haven’t set up anything yet but looking for cheap and easy and a place to set up for cold winters and warm summers. Sounds like I want it all
  4. I have been interested in Aquaponics for some years now but have only just built my first setup useing IBC's. Have had tropical and gold fish as a hobby for some years but didn't want to use them in my system, so if any one know's of any eatable fish suitable for this area and how to purchase them I would be happy to hear about it. Cheers Bob
  5. Already doing Aquaponics and aquaculture. Just wanting to share and learn knowledge in this neo-agricultural practice that can be done by anyone.
