  1. Hey all! The word around town is that this forum has a lot of good advice (unlike some others online). I decided to make an account today. I have cobbled together a twin IBC tote aquaponics system in my side yard. It's a great hobby, but wanted to share it with other people. I'm sure all my friends are sick of hearing about it by now, except those I have managed to infect with the aquaponics bug. I try to do everything a bit different, as long as it makes sense. Here is an outline of what I have setup Two IBC totes, 330gal and a 275gal. The larger tote has the top cut off, and serves as the main fish tank. The bottom half of the smaller 275gal tote works as my grow bed. The top half of the smaller tote is mounted on top of the larger tote, with water draining down from the center cap. I use the "top tank" for raising minnows, which the bottom fish eat. I raise fairy shrimp in a section of the top tank, which the minnows eat. About 20 clams live in the bottom fish tank for filtering Somewhere around 10 amano shrimp are mixed in each tank, including the grow bed. If you want to see the minnows, I built a little monitoring interface with a raspberrypi and some coding (my day job has me online most of the time). Check it out if you would like to, http://70.162.39.217/ and thanks for existing so that I could find this forum!
  2. Can anyone tell me how to go about breeding Tilapia in my IBC tote? I recently netted some (4) large tilapia in a drainage pond in Sarasota, FL. and put them in an IBC tote. I know that tilapia make beds in the pond bottoms near the edges in shallow water. I was thinking of putting a small black cement mixing container filled with our sandy soil into the IBC but suspend it on cement blocks to make it nearer to the surface. I have seen some videos of people that have made stacked 4" PVC sections and have bred them in them. Kingjam
  3. Hello Everyone, I am a retired middle school teacher living in Florida. I am planning to develop a aquaponic system using two 275 gallon IBC totes which I have bought and cut off the top at the very top and cleaned out. I cut the totes at the very top so that I would maximize the volume of the fish tanks. I will use 55 gallon blue barrels cut lengthwise in halves to act as my growbeds. There are so many questions that I have I am afraid to make a start. At this point, I would appreciate advice from anyone as to how to proceed. I am anxious to learn from your experiences. Some of the questions are about: system design, suitable and best pump to use, how to collect waste and remove from the IBC totes using only one economical poump, etc. Any advice would be much appreciated. Kingjam
  4. I plan to use two 275 gallon ibc totes cut at top to maximize volume. How big a pump should I use? Any suggestions for the best pump to buy?
  5. Greetings from north Florida. I suddenly have a bunch of plastic tanks, and every conceivable pvc fitting and I'm getting the bug. Building an IBC tote based flood and drain system. Here are some pics of the early stages testing the siphons. learned a lot from lurking on the forum, so I decided to join.
