AquaAurora posted a topic in AQUAPONICS SYSTEMSI have another thread here but the title is no longer applicable as its about goldfish, and I'm setting up for betta and tilapia aquaponic tanks. Don't worry I won't be house the species together. If you're curious what MTS stands for its multi tank syndrome aka having a lot of tanks.. seeing as I am at 19 aquariums and possible getting another its safe to say I have mts... at this moment only 1 of the 19 is an aquaponic system but I'll soon have 2 75gs (for tilapia) and 4 betta tanks also set up for growing edible plants (total will be 7 of 20 tanks used for aquaponics). I come into the hobby with an aquarium hobby background. I've kept fish and aquatic plants for several years. I've also do a lot of riparium work-its pretty much the same as aquaponics only different being I use non edible plants and roots are right in the tank (instead of separate grow bed). I had an NFT system setup for a while a few years back which successfully grew lettuce and I think cilantro. The pleco (south American catfish) I had int eh tank below grew too lager and his poop kept clogging the canister filter I used so I re-homed him and took the aquaponics down. in April 2016 I got back into aquaponics again as I got some fancy goldfish and wanted to extra help with water quality. I ended up with some monster lettuce and a decent sized cucumber before taking those plants out and doing peppers:jalapeno and Pasilla Bajo. Next post will be quotes from old thread. All new posts/updates will be in this thread.
40 breeder with DIY in tank sump made from cut lexan with holes drilled and stuffed with foam to allow water through. Have a pump surrounded by foam and bio media as well as heater and temp controller. Lids are a 3500k 50 watt I think? T5 x2 4', and a 36" Finnex LED. My workers (nitrate producers) include:Sprinkles the calico ryukin x fantail mix, Chocoalte the blue oranda, and Very Berry the mystery snail. I also have water sprite growing under water (and a bit above) in this tank. All the veggie goodness Lettuce is looking more like a tree as the lower leaves are harvested for salads, look at that monster root/stem! Cucumber continues to grow, hoping it will fill out more evenly instead of looking like a gourd/squash Chocolate (left), Sprinkles (right) Chocolate Very Berry Full under water tank shot
I've had this for a few months now and I really jumped in way too deep at first so there's been a lot of back tracking. I was just so excited to start. I think I'm finally starting to see a healthier system. I just tested the water and I got: pH-6.0 Ammonia 1.0ppm Nitrite 5.0 Nitrate 100ppm is that too high? I'm not sure where these levels are supposed to be. I know I want the pH higher, like 6.8-7.2 but the others I'm not so sure about. It's a 20 gallon fish tank that I have underneath the grow bed which is a 63 liter plastic tote that was not a good choice. I don't think it's deep enough and it's getting all bulgy on the bottom. So there's a 396 gal/hour pump which is way over-kill and I couldn't get my siphon to kick off so I lowered the flow rate by piping the water into a 5 gallon tote with net pots in it. the water fills up the tote like a flood and drain and slows the filling of the main grow bed enough so that the siphon stops properly and I have more plant spaces.
