  1. Hi all nice to meet you all I hope to learn a lot here. I found a link here from someone on Youtube. I have been watching a lot of videos and reading a lot of blogs and finally started my build this weekend. You can see my progress so far http://aquaponicbasementgarden.blogspot.com. I am pleased with the construction and I will be replacing the glass 55 gallon fish tank I was going to use with 2 100 gallon plastic totes. I will be getting my pump this week as well. I believe a 1000 gph pond pump should do the trick. Please check out my work so far and let me know what you think and give me any ideas you may have. This is just a start. I plan to utilize more or my basement as I get a handle on this type of growing. Shot of collection end that will drop back into tank Feeder tubes
  2. I am very interested in aquaponics systems. I have built a small hobby sized model. and learned a lot about aquaponics mostly by my mistakes. I have been doing a ton of research and am designing a large system for a college project as well as for implementation. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  3. Well, having played with goldfish, wicking beds and small-scale hydroponics, I have decided to move through ‘gunna’ to ‘do it' so far as an aquaponics system is concerned’. (in a moment of weakness on my wife’s part). I started by planning what I was hopping to achieve, and then moving into the implementation. The system is currently being installed (Silver Perch arrived last night.) Planning Phase My ‘design’ criteria were: 1. Support maximum of 20 kg fish. (before moving to another house) a. Plan to move house Sep 2011 and increase the size of the system to 40 kg-60 kg fish by adding larger FT & GB. 2. Capable of growing enough salad vegetables for two people most of the time. - Resulting in desire for ‘Raft’ as well as ‘normal’ growbeds. 3. Provide non-Growbed Bio-filtration for water (may want to work independent of GB’s in winter). Also will need to split the system during the move to a new location. – May need separate ‘sump’ (as in Crusty’s School System) currently but this is not included in design. 4. Set up outdoors in Toowoomba initially (prior to house move), but fish tanks under shade cloth shade. – May require fish able to live in outside temperatures ranging from 0 deg C to 40 deg C e.g. Silver Perch. 5. Expand and reuse most components on move in September 2011. - Resulting in ‘oversized’ containers for Fresh Flow Filter (FFF) and Moving Bed Filter (MBF) components. 6. Able to go away for two weeks, leaving Son-In-Law to visit and do maintenance periodically. 7. Use ‘waste’ for existing ‘Wicking Beds’. - Requiring extra ‘air’ and ‘air-stones’ to oxidise waste. 8. Low noise affecting close neighbours. - Resulting in ‘Continuous Flow’ decision. 9. Budget about A$3,000 In my next post, I hope to share some of the issues I encounted and lessons learnt and how practical reality, cost and price constraints have affected the implementation of the design. I will say now, that all of the good ideas incorporated into my system came from Crusty, GaryD and others on this site. All of the bad ideas (many) were my attempts to cut corners and make 'improvements'. Ray
  4. how can I help YOU ? Looking to get "open source" information...... Let's share the aquaponics experience, please post...
  5. Hey all, new to the forum and I'm way excited about the systems we are wrapping up before spring. Our outdoor system is doing great, it's still a little cold and I'm going to need to get some algae eaters in there to clean it up a little: The indoor system is just starting to really move though the nitrogen cycle. Indoor: ohh sorry images are so big Facebook Fanpage: http://goo.gl/5ayL0 youtube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/edpozek Take care.
  6. Hey all, Edward here, just joined the board and I wanted to show you my systems that I have been working on for the past few months. This is my finished indoor system: And this is my 55gal outside barrel system: Anyway I'm trying to get active on the boards and I'm really active on youtube. I Just wanted to introduce myself.
  7. I am a high school teacher and my class is about to finish setting up a continuous flow aquaponics system. I want to get the seeds started but was wondering what the best way to start the seeds would be? Once in the system the plants will be growing in pots filled with river pebbles. What is the best way to start the plants? Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.
  8. Gary: This is an EMERGENCY! I have a 300 gallon tank that the levels just won't seem to come down. For the past three days the readings remain the same no matter what I add to the tank. Here are the reading as of 1 hour ago: PH: 8.1 Ammonia: .50 ppm Nitrite: 2.0 ppm Nitrate: 20 ppm Water Temp: 64.5 deg F Greenhouse Temp: 78 def F Humidity: ~40 pct Inside that troublesome tank are 2 Rainbow trout about 14" each and 3 largemouth bass (4 - 8 inches each). I am using two 4" air stones and I have mechanical filtration using bio balls. I added the appropriate amount of Microbe-Lift Nite Out II and Microbe Lift PL. I also did a 10 percent water change and still the numbers have not changed. Here is what I plan to do, so please advise: 1. I have another tank that have cycled that has a few gold and mosquito fish. I want to move the fish them to that tank. 2. Do a 50 percent water change 3. Clean and recycle the tank 4. Do nothing and wait a few days and see if the Microbe solution kicks in 5. Your suggestion!
