  4. Brief Intro: I am Phani Krishna, living and working in UK. During my vacation to India, I am setting up a small scale iAVS system at an orphanage in hyderabad, to establish their own food supply system. I have made some progress with the project and now I feel I need some help from the community to take my ideas forward. The project is being established at the kitchen backyard of the shelter home. The area was all dirty and infested with wild rats earlier and hence I took the decision to pour a concrete slab at the ground level to be sure about the environment for the system. The tank size is approximately 25000 litres with a depth of 2 metres. Size of Tank: 1.5 x 3 x 6m (slope of 1ft towards North East) Proposed fish tank usage volume: 14 cu.m. (can be reduced to suit the growing area) Size of 1 grow media bed: 1.3m x 3m x 0.42m (area 3.9sq.m.), central drain of about 30mm dia Total Grow Beds : 11 (can be extended on requirement) Total Growing Volume: 17.16 cu.m The concrete ground is sloping from south east to north east with a 1foot slope approximately. Pump Details: Inlet Size: 32mm Outlet Size 25mm Head : 17 to 27m Discharge : 180 LPM Since this is my first aquaponics/iAVS project, I am planning to use the tank only partially untill the shelter home staff get accustomed to the system and its use, while I also learn and fine tune the variables. In the attached pictures of the area, one can see the brick lines of proposed biofilter beds for growing plants. We have set it up as a bed size of 1.3x3m with 0.3 to 0.4m wall/walkway between the beds. To pump water from the tank, we have selected a 1hp openwell submersible pump. I have not yet got the sand delivered and hence could not do conductivity test and pH test for the system. Meanwhile, I am planning to install the pump and plumbing for the system. I am not sure of the pump selection and plumbing arrangement. I am of the opinion that water supply for all the beds will be piped to the pump, but in this case, the flow will be different in the first bed when compared to the last bed due to the distance the water has to travel from the pump. How to manage to get constant or similar flow rate on all bed supply points ? Is the pump selection approximately matching the system ? Is it better to increase the biofilter area to match 1:2 ratio of tank to grow media ? I have not yet decided on the quantity and type of fish but to begin with, I am planning to introduce ornamental fish like Gold fish (because the institution follows Gandhian philosophy of vegetarian diet). The organization for which I am setting up this system is a NGO established by Mahatma Gandhi. They provide shelter for victims of rape, social abuse, trafficking etc. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to contribute to such a cause in my own little way. Any help from this forum to help me complete the project is greatly appreciated !

  6. Just got introduced to iAV system for Aquaponics. Could someone tell us whether one needs a bio filter with sand or its works like one and we can avoid having a bio filter completely. How does one calculate the size for a bio filter for say 3000 ltr tank with 60 fishes each around .5kg.
  7. Hi folks, I hope you are willing to share some of your experiences and insights with me. I'm Mikkel, a 27 year old Dane and a total newbie, when it comes to aquaponics. I grew up on a farm and now I'm looking for a way to farm in urban environment, where I currently live. Aquaponics definitely seems to be a very appealing option. I reach out, because I would like to know a little about the challenges of aquaponics, before jumping right into it. I imagine some of have had your struggles already and have the personal experience to pinpoint, what I should focus on. So to make it easy, I'll only ask one question: What are the three main challenges for you as an aquaponic farmer? I'm looking forward to learning a lot.   8. Hi I have been doing backyard aquaponics since few months, good results. I recently changed my whole set up to a larger one. I am concerned about the solid wastes. I have a 300 ltrs fish tank and grow media of quartz silica sand. I am now allowing solid waste also to be pumped to the grow bed. Do i need a seperate filter for removing solid or will the grow bed acts as the filter if i add eartworms to it?

  10. My wife and I are both new to backyard farming but in the process of building a system based on IBC totes - hydroponics so far this winter without the fish. Before I commit to adding the fish, I am considering vermiponics either eliminating the fish, or at least minimizing their use - although, not eliminating the fish totally brings along all fish maintenance issues with lesser return on the efforts, I think. Both retired now, we live in a home that my father build here in South Carolina U.S.A. The property was a decommissioned school property that had partial burned down with part rebuilt as a home. With a place to live we also have the time, the space, the tools and the determination to supplement our own health with good, home grown food and rewarding an on-going activity of interest to both of us. (As an ex-programmer, I am also interested in system automation where possible, connecting the grow-system’s monitor/control functionality IoT like via WiFi - already started and of little interest to my wife.) We started by converting an old shed attached to the cinderblock add-on of the original 1-room schoolhouse (circa 1940’s.) It is a make-do greenhouse for our grow beds with poor sun light exposure. The fish tank, sump tank and most of the plumbing reside inside the cinderblock section where I have the heating and cooling up and running for the limited space we using. There is plenty of room for expansion inside and we are planning some outside grow beds next season too. We’ve also added a small worm farm moved inside as well. The startup system consists of an IBC fish tank (~275 gal.), a cut down IBC sump tank (about 170 gal.) and a single split IBC grow bed (~14 sq. ft.) setup in an ebb and flow configuration. The sump tank has one pump and feeds the fish tank only. The fish tank uses gravity to feed the grow bed(s). There is also a gravity overflow back to the sump tank from the fish tank. And of course, the grow bed(s) drain back to the sump tank as well. For a few pictures, here is our Instagram link: Instagram pictorial of our startup system.   11. Hi all. Newbie with the goal of designing and building a 40-60gal fish tank with either gravel or sand base for a healthy number of cichlids to enjoy watching them making homes and breeding. An air lift pump inside the tank will create flow and stir up solids, maybe incorporate a mechanical filter within. The tank will be drilled at the top to set a water level... water will overflow to a grow bed, after dropping through a mechanical sponge or filter floss. The bed will drain into a sump where a pump will bring the (clean) water up to a series of PVC tubes for NFT growing, probably lettuce. The water will zig zag through the pipes, or I will build them in parallel and collect them back above the fish tank, into which will spray return water. Not sure about the bed... probably will go with the expanded clay stuff, but am intrigued by the sand as well. That said, I really don't want sand ending up in the sump and the pump, so I think the clay is a good idea. I've got a kitchen cabinet next to a mini kitchen, so can create a safety overflow drain for the aquarium as well as support the grow bed by a window, which I will supplement with grow lights on a timer. The cabinet counter can support the grow bed and aquarium, and there is an empty space below where I can place the sump. The PVC NFT beds can span above the grow bed and the fish tank. Advantages are mechanical and biological filters before the sump, which can be in the dark, minimizing solids and algae growth. Only one pump for water movement means the system will remain "balanced" and I won't have to worry about water building up somewhere. If the electricity runs out, no overflows occur. Excess water ends up in the sump. The water returning to the fish tank will be cleaned mechanically and twice biologically, and well aerated. The grow bed will be 1' above counter height, so a nice height at which to harvest. The PVC grow tubes will be higher, admittedly, but do take advantage of available natural light. Questions: should I bother with a Bell siphon, or just plumb a standpipe at a certain height? What plants to grow in the bed? I've got the idea to grow strawberries for my daughter, perhaps some chives and oregano. How often should I be able to turn over the fish tank? 6-8 times per hour is the goal for aquariums, is that the goal here? I anticipate need to lift the water 5 feet or thereabouts, so what pump might be well suited? Any other ideas? Foreseeable problems?

  13. 40 breeder with DIY in tank sump made from cut lexan with holes drilled and stuffed with foam to allow water through. Have a pump surrounded by foam and bio media as well as heater and temp controller. Lids are a 3500k 50 watt I think? T5 x2 4', and a 36" Finnex LED. My workers (nitrate producers) include:Sprinkles the calico ryukin x fantail mix, Chocoalte the blue oranda, and Very Berry the mystery snail. I also have water sprite growing under water (and a bit above) in this tank. All the veggie goodness Lettuce is looking more like a tree as the lower leaves are harvested for salads, look at that monster root/stem!   14. I built my first aquaponics system in Palm Harbor, FL several years ago. I did about six months worth of research and design before I started my build. The effort paid off. I mainly use solid grow media. Most of which is clay pellets. Some of which is a combination of clay pellets, shell, and river pebbles. I've added red worms into my designs in order to keep my system clean and provide worm castings tea. I ordered my red worms online and had them delivered to my home. I've never had to buy more worms since they have multiplied to the extent that I have them in abundance for new grow bed builds. I've read numerous posts, articles, and books in which the authors have stated that they build their systems w/out adding in red worms. They've stated that the grow beds will populate themselves with red worms. My question is how do these red worms work their way into their systems w/out being added? I imagine most systems like mine are up on stands and most tanks do not appear that they would provide much of a surface for a worm to climb. This has always been a mystery to me.   15. Hello everyone. I'm new to the concept of "Microponics". I have a couple aquaponics systems in my back yard. I'm also into Rabbitry and Permaculture as well. I've got a few chickens that lay me plenty of eggs and produce grade A fertilizer. I would love to know if anyone has some tips on doing Microponics in climates like mine. For starters we get crazy weather down here. One minute it's bone dry and then bam... Crazy rain storms with high winds etc. Another real big challenge is the horribly sandy soil. On the plus side it drains nice and cuts down on the root rot. We also have a problem with fruit rats. They are horrible. I use Tom Cat baits to work with them but there must be a better way. It seems like if you don't put out the Tom Cat poison, they will take a nibble out of every vegetable and fruit in your backyard. Last but not least... We've got bugs like no other place in country. They should make the mosquito into the state bird. The Tiger Mosquitos here are big enough to stand flat footed and hump a chicken. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Good to see world universities are picking up Commercial Aquaponics as a subject for research but I wonder why Draud has not even heard about iAVs and is now trying to re-invent the wheel and inventing new technologies.   17. I am setting up my first aquaponics system and I am considering either tilapia, bluegill, or crappie. Which would you suggest? I live in KY and tilapia require a license. My favorite to eat is crappie but I mostly find information on bluegill. Since they are both sunfish, they can't be that much different to raise.

  19. I've decided to trade in urban farming (including Aquaponics) for raising ducks and expanding my garden and having an orchard in the country. Not giving up my day job, just commuting longer by 10 minutes. Anyway, I'll be selling my Aquaponic grow beds and hydroton - look for it in the appropriate section.   21. If there is another thread on this please direct me to it but I was unable to find anything. First off does anyone here have experience with AP Trout? I am asking because I have never done trout and I am looking to overwinter this year. Couple questions... - Best subspecies? Please include temp ranges if you know off the top of your head. - Reliable Breeders? - Is size a problem? I am working with an IBC tank I believe 400 gallons with the top chopped off so probably 350. - What about water conditions other than temp? Are they picky or hardier? - Does trout taste good? I've heard some really good things in this dept. Thanks again for any answers or generally useful information. <3 chu guys
  22. So I'm getting ready to fill my system once again for another summer (and hopefully winter this time) of Aquaponics joy. I was wondering should I paint my tanks black before I fill them? I was wondering this for two reasons. One it should cut down on the algae population and two to help over winter the tank when the time comes. Thoughts?   23. ​Yesterday I got my Goji cutting in the mail. I was thinking about plugging it into my Aquaponic unit but I wanted to check to see if anyone else had tried this before and how well it worked for them. A quick search of the internet hasn't really turned up much of anything. Thoughts?
  24. Ok, there is no certification or qualification process yet. But what would it take to be a qualified aquaponics teacher to hold classes and teach the masses either backyard or commercial? I know that a few of you are more than qualified to teach but do not have the time or inclination to do classes. What would it take to become an apprentice of yours? There are many organizations that are self regulating that come up with standards for teaching and whether we like it or not this will be something that happens. Why not start it here with the best and most knowledgeable people in the business?
  25. HI Y'all, I have a small aquaponic farm in Central Texas, pictures and such can be viewed on the website (see link below). First, I will tell you about the configuration: 32' x 132' high tunnel, shade in summer, single poly in winter, no heat no cooling. From the 2200 gallon fish tank the water flows continuously to two 4' x 12' media/worm beds with a Flout (mechanical drain) in each to fill and drain 24/7. From here the water flows to a 110 gal stock tank (biofilter/clarifier/polisher/whatever you want to call it) rising from the bottom with 3 Matala filters (3 differing densities) and some bird netting then into the first trough of 2000 sq ft (2 - 2' x 100' and 2 - 8' x 100'), where the pump pulls from the last trough back to the fish tank. I germinate in some nursery stands I have made in the green house when temp permits and otherwise in a heated or cooled room I have, depending on outside temps. Some back story, I started in aquaponics in May 2012, when I teamed up with a local farmer, bought the FAP DIY manual and built the first high tunnel and system from those designs. I had some previous experience with aquarium fish and hydroponics, but only at the small hobby level. I am pretty handy with construction and understanding how most things work so with the help of the internet we were off and running, so to speak. I learned pretty early on that working for the farmer was not going to be the experience I hoped for so started looking to get my own property and system running. In June 2013, I moved onto the present property and began building. With only the occasional help I got the new and improved system up and running with fish going in in early August. The improvements or some would say and I agree, necessities from the earlier build were the additions of the media/worm bed and the tank filter. A system without filtration is only asking for anaerobic activity, fish deaths and the wasting of time cleaning troughs of smelly anaerobic fish waste. By mid Oct. 2013 I had my first crop of lettuce and have grown around 16,000 products up till now (primarily lettuce, but also kale, Swiss Chard, couple types of basil, radicchio, Napa cabbage, bok choi, tatsoi and the list goes on, some with success some not). I was able to learn about the surrounding market demand (within 3 hours of me there are nearly 20 million people) while working at the first farm and used those contacts to develop my sales and marketing leads for my primary sales to wholesale buyers. In developing my business plan I also was looking at Farmer's Markets and my own CSA. For my wholesale buyers I was hoping to produce 500-900 products per week for 40-45 weeks of the year. For this first year I will be a little off the low number but I did go through many product losses, bugs and what not. I am still happy with the point I have gotten to but realize that I need to add another 2000- 4000 sq ft of growing area if I am going to make a better than break even living at this. I will also have to move from a simple one man operation to have 2-3 workers, mainly for harvesting, but also some planting. The above takes me anywhere from 30-40 hrs per week to run, but doubling grow space would not double time required as some synergies of scale could be achieved. I had envisioned the aquaponics to be the backbone of a small farming operation (microponics) with maybe a few dirt crops (eg. sweet potatoes, melons, squash) some chickens (eggs mainly for the Farmer's Markets and CSA), rabbits (good meat and would give my kids something to help with), vermiculture (I have all the waste from harvesting to compost), maybe some pigs and I always have other ideas coming but only so much time. I wanted to grow my own food and make a decent living while enjoying the work I do. There is much more I can write but will leave it with that and answer as many questions as I can, want or have time too.
