Anaerobic sludge does not harm plant growth as long as it is oxygenated prior to giving it to plants,  Oxygenating anaerobes, kills most of them. The more pathogenic the more likely they are to die when introduced to oxygen.    An example is Escherichia coli.   There are many species , but only a few that are pathogenic to humans.

The most common one O:157 H:7 have an enzyme that enable them to penetrate the gut and cause problems.  This same enzyme reacts with oxygen and causes the bacteria to die.

I can't say with clear certainty that all pathogens will be killed(vibrios come to mind) with oxygen, but aerobic bacteria tend to consume them as well.   I can say when I tested the anaerobic sludge from my settling tank after taking it from my vortex brewer after brewing for 48 hours, that sample was negative for pathogenic indicators.

I now plan to convert over to a dual loop. The first step will be to replace the cloth with k1 and add air to turn it into a MBBR. Once the MBBR has colonized ill isolate the plants and fish. While the MBBR is colonizing, I'll prepare the system for the isolation.

Below are hand drawings of what I plan to do. The idea is not mine but a sketch up of what I plan to do based on shared online information on this forum and BYAP forum. Strider, Swed, Paul, and many others on the forums and YT have been a big influence

    Constructive criticism is appreciated.

    Thank you.

Please see my system page for details of the current single loop setup.

Lmannyr you are right. In a MT there is an abundance of heterotrophic bacteria where as in a MBBR (biofilter and no solids) there are auto trophic bacteria. A mt that goes completely anaerobic will drop pH But it will increase as soon as you add air. Air helps strip the co2 which is making the water acidic during anaerobic conditions. Now if you have anaeobic zones in an aerated MT the pH will go up as the co2 is offgassed This is why people notice pH increasing in their MT. (i think)

I am working on,it right now.. Just the RAS side of it. And the structucture that it will be housed within.

    Strider,
    Thanks for your time.
Yup, I have followed your videos since you started dual loop.
So since the MT tank is always online on the plant side, how are nitrate levels controlled? From readings online, plants like certain nutrients at different levels at different stages of growth to optimize production.
How much feed by weight are the fish getting daily? What are your nitrates running?
I have a single loop system and I'm in the planning stages of converting over to dual loop. I'll be creating a new thread for the conversion soon.

No, not really. I go there maybe once a month if that.

    Swede,
Details on the revision of my system can be seen on the "other forum"
Not sure if I can post a link here...

My slo to RFF is at the same height as the main drain. I think that is where my problem is. I have to play with it again.

    Oh ok. Thanks Swede.

Strider, anyone else on the forums doing dual loop?  Your system looks great but would like to see more examples.  I'm liking the dual loop.  Do you think the hydro fertilizer you used has anything to do with the fast growth?  Thanks

    I joined....
Where exactly are you two outflows. I see the SLO but where is the second drain?
