  6. I'm thinking lack of sunlight. Have you tried adding iron?
  7. Hi Wayne L. For my system, 1.7 yrs old, my nitrate level is 0 - 10 ppm with a pH of 6.8. For the other systems, 3 - 6 months old, the nitrate levels are 10 - 20 ppm with a pH of 7- 8. Erwin's system has a nitrate level of 80-100 ppm with a pH of 6.8 which is going for a year now. pH also has an effect on nutrient absorption. Before I raised (Oreochromis) nilotica Tilapia now I raise Red Tilapia or King Fish. Martin
  8. When our systems were young (1-2 months), we had the same problems. We added iron to the water and seaweed extract to increase the nutrients. We also added effective micro organisms to it to boost the good bacteria level. Another factor would be sunlight. During our rainy season, low sunlight, the lettuce grew long stems and small leaves. Temperature also affects the growth. We had poor growth rates this summer because it was too hot. My water was 82 deg F which was above the root zone temp recommended for lettuce. You can have better lettuce growth by controlling or limiting the effects of these factor either thru water additives, crop scheduling, Greenhouses, temperature control etc.
  9. You're Welcome Wayne! The first part was boring. Hehe. I had to add Ren, my spider, as a comic relief.

  11. Thanks! I was thinking on modify the 3rd compartment into a trickle bio filter or add an MBF to that design (I just need to contact the K1 supplier you gave me before).
  12. I have a top bar hive at home with native bees (not as efficient as honey bees) but does a great job pollinating the flowers. I found all the instructions in the net. (Requires some carpentry skills). I had to modify a vacuum cleaner to make a bee vac and capture a wild hive inside our wall. I trapped the queen and placed it in a small cage. The workers quick made their home inside the top bar hive. But after a year the temperatures went up. I found out the bees abscond to the nearest hole in the wall. My top bar hive is now empty and the bees are back in the wall. So I just left them there.

  14. The yoga setup is our display set-up. We don't grow plants in it. We just use it as a platform to prolong the life of the lettuce until they are sold. It's like a vending machine we replenish with lettuce from our systems. It doubles as a "Low energy Refrigerator" and a promotional Set-up.
